Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in technology and science. Musk taught himself computer programming and developed a video game called Blastar at the age of 12, which he sold to a computer magazine.

He attended University of Pretoria briefly before moving to Canada. Musk later studied at Queen's University and subsequently transferred to University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in physics and economics.
